Wind Energy Across the USA
When there were no windmills, there were oil wells and oil trains. Our Subaru averaged just 27.5mpg over our 15,643 km (9720 mi) trip for a fuel cost of $1,307,78. Highest prices were in Boston and Chicago at $4.10/gal. Lowest prices were in Kansas at $3.39/gal, a difference of some 17%.
We promised our neighbor Winn that our departure at 4:00 a.m. on May 13 would be very quiet so we wouldn't wake her up. Well, we did get up 5:30 a.m., breakfasted, and quietly finished loading the car, emptying the refrigerator and freezer so we could turn them off, along with the furnace and hot water heater. Winn bid us goodbye about 11:00 a.m. as she headed out on errands.
We finally finished squeezing the last few items into the car, took a "selfie" of us and the house, and departed just after 1 o'clock p.m., just nine hours later than planned. Our first stop was Traveler's Rest at Snoqualmie Pass, about one bladder full after a heavily coffee-infused launch.
Our next stop was moteling it in Coeur d'Alene where Dianne found her swimsuit was missing: answer--Jim's gym shorts.
The passes were full of snow, but devoid of skiers all the way to MT. Here is Lookout Pass area at the MT border.
Off the Interstate: Drummond MT, population: 327. You can see from the map that Drummond is out in the very wide open spaces.
Hunger hist in Drummond. An ice cream parlor run by an American/Mexican couple provided relief.
In late afternoon, we arrived near Yellowstone to find a herd of elk enjoying a farmer's well watered pasture. The animals are found wherever the dinner bell rings loudest.
On a ranch just over the Yellowstone border, the elk were enjoying the grass in an irrigated pasture.
Who would have guessed that a free campground (Canyon Campground) was just outside Yellowstone in Gardiner. Now you know where to stop on your way to the geysers.
