To 50th Reunion

Egad! Could 50 years have passed so quickly? We received a warm welcome from student hosts who led us on a chase through one activity after another.

Old Chapel, Middlebury College

Campus Map: Everything, except the ski area, is an easy walk.

June 5: Had breakfast and put away camping stuff. Headed north on Hwy 100 to Middlebury. Stopped at a bakery for some coffee and a treat, mine was a raisin cookie. We reached Middlebury shortly after noon, registered, parked the car, and moved our clothes and gear into Forest Hall. We had lunch at Ross Hall, explored the campus, and got ready for a lovely beef dinner.

The photo above is Painter Hall, oldest college building in Vermont, Jim's residence for 4 years.

Middlebury: Birthplace of the Frisbee. Frisbee Monument.

June 6: Breakfast in the college dining hall that showed how much college dining has evolved: waffles, sausages, fruit, pancakes, cereal, omelets, etc.

We attended a social action memoir consisting of a panel of speakers about "The Sixties" and how they changed our lives: Women's Movement, Gay Rights, Peace Corps, women in business. A reception and dinner was held on campus.

June 7: Began the day with breakfast. Dianne joined a meeting with '64 women alums talking about their experience at Midd. Very interesting, lots of laughs. We prepped lunches and took buses to hike Texas Falls. It was a long ride up to a short loop hike, but most folks enjoyed it. Jim did follow up with one of the staff, Miguel. Back to Midd for Ice Cream Social & change clothes for the evening event.

That evening we enjoyed a dramatic presentation by Roger Simon, a Broadway star and '64 graduate of Middlebury.

June 8: The next day was for celebrating all the returning classes.

Hundreds of canes pounded out the strains to the college anthem: Gamilial Painter's Cane.

Verse 1: When Gamaliel Painter died, he was Middlebury's pride,
A sturdy pioneer without a stain;
And he left his all by will, to the college on the hill,
And included his codicil cane.

Chorus: Oh, it's rap rap rap, and it's tap tap tap,
If you listen you can hear it sounding plain;
For a helper true and tried, as the generations glide,
There is nothing like Gamaliel Painter's cane.

Dianne took photos of Jim & classmates as they paraded into chapel for Reunion ceremony. After the ceremony all participants headed for dinner and evening festivities. Dinner main course had choice of salmon or beef steak with asparagus and salad, all very delicious. After that, we watched fireworks and danced to a great band playing 60's & 70's music...terrific fun. Danced till 11 pm, then went to the college observatory to see Saturn and its Rings through the telescope.

Last day of reunion; Breakfast at Ross in the fireplace lounge. Roger Simon joined us. Talked long about his experience at Midd. Then spoke with Bob Baskin about his work with a non-profit called The Peace Alliance (www: peacealliance.org). He hopes to turn it into a Federal Program, perhaps called the Department of Peace.
